Leo,
Mohammed Aljbour's cat from Gaza, who appeared with him almost daily X and Insta for the past 20 months, died due to a lack of impossible proper care.
The mourning of Leo, the cat, thus joins this broader and terrifying reality: in Gaza, everything that “touches” us in our Western imaginations is there, intertwined, unvarnished.
Gaza is exactly what this concentrated territory embodies, in its tragedy, everything that should move Western sensibility — the death of animals, the death of children, theft, a racist genocide, violence justified by religious fundamentalism. It’s literally the “bingo card” of all these horrors that the West claims to fight, showcasing these very sufferings as universal symbols of struggle and justice. And yet, it is the West itself that enables it.
